If you are new to flying in Australia, two letters will come up again and again: RPL and PPL. They are the two most common entry-point licences, and choosing between them depends on how you want to fly.
What is the RPL?
The Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) is a lighter, lower-cost way to fly for leisure. It lets you fly single-engine aircraft for recreation, usually close to the airport you train at. For many people it is a great, affordable starting point.
What is the PPL?
The Private Pilot Licence (PPL) is the classic first licence. It lets you carry passengers, fly further and have more freedom in the sky, and it is the natural next step if you may one day fly for a career. Most commercial pilots start with a PPL.
Which should you choose?
- Flying occasionally for fun and keeping costs down → the RPL may fit.
- Planning to carry passengers, fly further, or progress toward a career → choose the PPL.
Whatever you choose, start with theory
Both licences rest on the same strong theory foundation. Studying the pilot theory subjects first, through an online course like CBT Systems, means you are ready and confident before you step into the aircraft.
