Air Navigation for Pilots

Air navigation is the art and science of getting from one place to another safely. It is planning where you are going, knowing where you are, and correcting course as conditions change — the subject that puts the “pilot” in “navigate”.

What this subject covers

  • Courses, headings, tracks and basic navigation maths
  • Chart reading and flight planning
  • Navigational aids and how to use them
  • Trouble-shooting when things do not go to plan

Why it matters

Navigation is where planning and flying come together. A pilot who can plan a route, then stay on it in the air, is safe and efficient — and the skill carries through from your first solo cross-country to professional operations.
