General aeronautical knowledge is the “how it works” side of flying — the systems, instruments and aircraft that keep you and your passengers safe. For most Australian pilots, it is studied alongside aerodynamics as the technical foundation of their training.
What this subject covers
This subject explains the systems and components that make an aircraft a practical machine to fly:
- Powerplant and how an engine works
- Propellers, fuel and lubrication systems
- Electrics, instruments and flight controls
- Landing gear, brakes and airframe
- Weight and balance, and how they affect handling
Why it matters in pilot training
A pilot does not need to be an engineer, but needs to understand what the aircraft is doing and why. Recognising how a system behaves — and what happens when it does not — is a core part of safe, confident flying in Australia.
